A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) allows individuals to legally operate large commercial vehicles such as semi-trucks, buses, and tanker trucks. CDLs are issued by individual state DMVs but must comply with federal FMCSA regulations. A CDL is required for most professional driving jobs.
ELDT stands for Entry-Level Driver Training, a federally mandated training requirement for individuals obtaining their CDL for the first time or adding specific endorsements.
ELDT training is divided into:
1. Theory Training (provided by ELDT Nation) – Covers road safety, driving regulations, vehicle inspection, and more.
2. Behind-the-Wheel Training (completed with a CDL school) – Covers hands-on vehicle operation, maneuvering, and real-world driving.
Both are required before scheduling your state CDL skills exam.
Course & Training Questions
Yes! Our training meets FMCSA federal standards, meaning it is valid nationwide. However, some states may have additional CDL requirements, so we recommend checking with your state DMV or local CDL schools for any extra steps.
CDL & Endorsements
Class A CDL: Allows you to operate large tractor-trailers (18-wheelers), tankers, flatbeds, and combinations exceeding 26,001 lbs, with a towed trailer over 10,000 lbs.
Class B CDL: Allows you to operate smaller commercial vehicles, such as box trucks, dump trucks, school buses, and public transit buses under 26,000 lbs, with trailers less than 10,000 lbs.
Hazmat (H) – Requires ELDT theory training, a written test at the DMV, and a TSA background check.
Passenger (P) & School Bus (S) – Requires ELDT training, a written test, and behind-the-wheel training with a registered provider.
It depends on the trucking industry sector you plan to enter. Some employers require specialized endorsements (e.g., Hazmat for fuel transport, Passenger for bus driving). Checking job postings or speaking with potential employers is the best way to determine which endorsements you need.
